Soprano Sooyeon Lee graduated from Seoul Arts High School and Seoul National University’s Vocal Music Department, and received her master’s degree in opera and postgraduate degrees in Vocal, Lied and Oratorio at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with top honors. Sooyeon Lee represented Korea as one of the top five finalists in the BBC’s prestigious Cardiff Singer of the World competition. She won second prize and the audience award at the ARD International Music Competition in Germany, and received the Culture and Arts Award at the Domingo Operalia Competition. Additionally, she has won numerous other competitions, including the Pavarotti Giovanni Award, the Viotti International Music Competition, and the Salzburg Mozart International Competition. She was also a finalist in the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Belgium and received the Opera Singer Award from the Erna-Schlüter Opera Association.

With a diverse repertoire that includes roles in operas such as Lucia di Lammermoor, La Sonnambula, Rigoletto, Die Entführung aus dem Serail, La Fille du Régiment, and La Traviata, Sooyeon Lee has demonstrated a broad artistic spectrum. In Korea, she held her first solo recital as a Kumho Young Artist. She has performed lieder extensively in venues such as Wigmore Hall in the UK, Frauenkirche in Dresden, and Theater Dortmund in Germany, and gave a notable recital in India with the renowned accompanist Helmut Deutsch.

She has performed with the Tonkünstler Orchestra at the New Year’s concert in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein, and participated in numerous music festivals including the Dubai Opera House, the Cully Festival in Switzerland, the SWR Festival in Germany, and the Rheingau Music Festival. Her European engagements have included performances at the Berlin Philharmonie, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Theater Bremen, Mozart House in Austria, and Schönbrunn Theater. She also toured France with Ensemble Pygmalion for a Mozart performance tour, and performed in an Asian tour with the Asian Youth Orchestra in China, Hong Kong, and Japan. Additionally, she has given embassy friendship concerts in Turkey, Croatia, Austria, and Finland.

Since 2016, Sooyeon Lee has been actively performing at German Theaters, starting as a soloist at the Oldenburg State Theater. Currently, she is performing as a soloist at the Theater Dortmund in Germany.

이수연은 〈람메르무어의 루치아>의 루치아, 〈리골레토〉의 질다, 〈몽유병의 여인〉의 아미나, 〈후궁으로부터의 도주〉의 콘스탄체, 〈연대의 아가씨〉의 마리, 그리고 〈라 트라비아타〉의 비올레타 등 다양한 오페라에서 주역을 맡으며 폭넓은 레퍼토리를 구축하였으며, 바그너의 니벨룽의 반지 전편에도 출연하여 독보적인 무대 경험을 쌓았다.

그녀는 금호 영아티스트로서 첫 독창회를 가진 이후, 영국 위그모어 홀, 독일 드레스덴 성모교회, 도르트문트 극장 등 유럽 주요 무대에서 활발히 활동했으며, 세계적인 가곡 반주자 Helmut Deutsch와 인도에서의 리사이틀 무대로도 큰 호평을 받았다. 오스트리아 톤 퀸스틀러 오케스트라와 함께 비엔나 Musikverein 황금홀에서 신년음악회를 가진 것을 비롯해, 두바이 오페라하우스, 스위스 Cully 페스티벌, 독일 SWR 및 Rheingau 뮤직페스티벌 등 다수의 무대에 초청되었다. 또한 베를린 필하모니, 뒤셀도르프 극장, 테아터 브레멘, 오스트리아 모차르트하우스, 셴부른 극장 등 유럽 전역에서 공연을 이어가며, 프랑스 앙상블 피그말리온과의 모차르트 투어, 아시안 유스 오케스트라와 함께한 아시아 투어, 그리고 터키·크로아티아·오스트리아·핀란드 대사관 초청 연주 등으로 활동 영역을 넓혀왔다.

이수연은 2016년부터 독일에서 활동을 이어오고 있으며, 2020년부터는 독일 도르트문트 극장의 솔리스트로서 다양한 작품 무대에 오르며 관객과 꾸준히 소통하고 있다.
